Travel sickness: emerging diseases in companion animals
Vector-borne disease in UK companion-animal practice, and what changes when the protection thins. The UK’s island geography once acted as a natural barrier against many vector-borne and imported infections. That protection is now rapidly eroding along three converging pressures: climate change, increased movement of animals, and large-scale rehoming practices.
Together, these three forces illustrate how the UK’s historical “island immunity” is diminishing, and why veterinary teams must adapt their diagnostic expectations, surveillance habits, and client communication to a new, more porous reality.
